GRANDPA JOINED US AT the store for the rest of the week—showing both me and Josie the ropes—and appearing to be in higher spirits than I’d seen since his accident. We’d just arrived back home on Friday evening, when Kit popped out of his apartment. We’d barely seen each other since the night we’d gone to dinner and grocery shopping. Speaking of which, the way he was dressed reminded me of how overdressed I’d been that night. Almost as if I thought we were going on a—

Ah, crap.

“Hey,” he said, smiling at me as he locked his door. “Long time, no see. Again.”

“I’ll give you two a minute,” said Grandpa, heading up the stairs.

“Be careful,” I called after him, cringing as he lifted his good hand off the railing to bat it dismissively at me. I waited until he was safely inside before turning my attention back to Kit.

“Not quite as long this time,” I said, trying to act casual. Trying not to stare at his crisp, button-up shirt and dark, non-tow-truck-driver-looking jeans. “Got a hot date or something?”

Of course, he had a hot date. This was exactly the reason why I couldn’t move back here and take over the store. The only thing more awkward than seeing Kit all the time would be seeing Kit going out on hot dates all the time. Sure, I had almost married somebody else. But I hadn’t expected Kit to watch me walk down the aisle.

He ran his hand through his hair, suddenly looking uncomfortable. “I made plans a few weeks ago,” he said. “I had no idea that you would be—”

“No, it’s cool,” I cut in. “Even if you’d known I would be here...why would that have mattered?”

“It...it wouldn’t have,” he said, jingling his keys around in his hand. “I just meant...we’re cool?”

“Super cool.”

That’s me. Super cool. I turned and walked stiffly up a few steps, wishing one of them would drop out from under me, sending me down into the bowels of the Earth. “Have fun. I’ll see you later.”

“Tomorrow?”

“Huh?” I stopped halfway up the stairs and turned around.

“Do you want to, maybe, do some sightseeing tomorrow? This will be your first weekend back. I thought you might like to see some of the old spots again.”

Looking down at him, I noticed that his pale green eyes were lost in the light gray plaid of his shirt. I felt a swell of relief that whomever he was going on a date with wouldn’t be getting their full impact. Not that he didn’t look good. But put him in a darker color—forest green, navy blue, black—and she’d be a goner. Whoever she was. For some reason, I didn’t want to ponder it further. I walked slowly back down a few steps until we were at eye level.

“You want to take me sightseeing tomorrow, after your hot date tonight?”

“I thought you said we were cool?”

We stared at each other for a few seconds. An unspoken challenge hung heavily in the air.

“I’ll meet you outside, bright and early,” I said.
